High performance vehicles like BMWs are precision engineered for power and efficiency, and that uncompromising design creates the driving satisfaction we love. If your BMW’s performance begins to fade, one or more of its precision components may be failing.

A relatively common culprit is the high-pressure fuel pump. By knowing what your BMW’s high-pressure fuel pump does and how to recognize when it is failing, you can get it repaired by professionals and get back to fully enjoying your Bimmer.

The Function of a High Pressure Fuel Pump

BMWs utilize an electronically-controlled high-pressure fuel pump to pump fuel from the tank at a precise, accurate volume and pressure. Together with the fuel injectors, the high-pressure fuel pump feeds the engine with the correct fuel-to-air ratio to deliver optimum performance.

When the fuel pump is compromised through wear and tear, your engine’s output suffers. Know how to maintain it and what to inspect, so you can have our experts replace a bad fuel pump before it completely fails.

High Pressure Fuel Pump Failure Warning Signs

If you notice one or more of these symptoms, you may have a failing high-pressure fuel pump, and it is time to bring it in for diagnostics and repair.

Loss of power accelerating

When you put more demand on your engine, such as towing a heavy load, climbing a hill, or accelerating, it requires the fuel pump to deliver more fuel to burn. If the fuel pump can’t keep up with the engine’s demand, the engine can’t output the power you expect.

Sputtering or rough running

If your fuel pump is failing, it will not be able to provide consistent fuel pressure to the engine. If your engine’s power output is unsteady, it can jerk and stutter, particularly when accelerating. It may be subtle, but rough engine behavior can be a sign of fuel pump failure.

Surging

An engine surge occurs when the vehicle accelerates without the driver pressing any harder on the accelerator. Much like with sputtering, when your fuel pump delivers inconsistent fuel pressure, it can deliver too much at the wrong time, leading to a surge. Engine surges can be very dangerous for you and the vehicles and pedestrians you share the road with.

Stalling

Vehicle stalling can happen for many reasons, and one possibility is a failing fuel pump. Stalling is another potentially dangerous malfunction, and if it is happening often, you should have your fuel pump checked.

Difficulty starting

If your BMW struggles to start, it could be the high pressure fuel pump. The engine needs to ignite the proper mixture of air and fuel to turn over and run. If the fuel pump can’t deliver enough fuel, the engine will try and fail to ignite air alone. When the fuel pump fails completely, your BMW simply won’t start.

Causes of High Pressure Pump Failure

All precision machines like BMWs experience wear and tear during operation, and high pressure fuel pumps are no exception. There are things you can do to keep your BMW’s fuel pump in good condition.

Oil changes

One of the most common reasons for high pressure fuel pump malfunction is failure to keep up with regular oil changes. The engine’s camshaft drives the fuel pump, and wear on the camshaft lobes, caused by poor lubrication, reduces the pressure the pump can produce. Keeping up with scheduled oil changes and using the correct BMW-certified oil is the best way to prevent high pressure fuel pump failure.

Fuel management

A high-performance engine deserves high-performance fuel, so choose quality gasoline for your BMW. You probably already know that, but you may not know that you can extend the life of your high pressure fuel pump by keeping your tank at least half full. The fuel pump is typically located in the fuel tank, because it relies on contact with the fuel itself to keep the pump cool. If the fuel level drops too low, the fuel pump can overheat.
