Land Rovers are known for their safety, which is why it might surprise you to know that they are particularly susceptible to airbag malfunctions. As you can imagine, a malfunctioning airbag is a serious problem and one that you definitely don’t want to discover when it’s too late and the accident is already happening.

Luckily, there are some safeguards in place to give you an idea of when the airbag has gone bad so you aren’t caught off guard during a crash. Let’s discuss what to look for in a malfunctioning airbag, the possible things that can go wrong, and what to do if you discover an issue with the airbag system.

Signs of an Airbag Malfunction

A Land Rover relies on its internal computer for everything, from firing the engine to detecting potential problems. As such, there is a sensor whose job it is to monitor the functionality of the airbag and alert you if there is something wrong. It’s a very rare thing, but if you see the airbag malfunction light turn on on your Land Rover’s dashboard, you should absolutely not ignore it. This indicator light is different than the one indicating it is not on due to no one being in the seat.

Instead, you should stop driving the car until you can bring it in to a mechanic for repair or replacement. Airbags are one of the most important parts of any vehicle’s safety system, and being without them can lead to serious injuries or even fatalities in the event of an accident. Driving with a faulty airbag is putting yourself and anyone in the car with you at risk.

Why Your Airbag Warning Light Might Turn On

There are several reasons why an airbag warning light might turn on because there are several ways that an airbag can malfunction. Here are some of them:

Depleted backup battery

In some cases, it may not be the airbag itself that is having problems, but the battery that goes with it. If for some reason that battery gets drained, the light will come on, and you will need to take the vehicle to a mechanic to diagnose the problem, recharge the battery, and reset the sensor.

Faulty sensors

If the sensors that detect your airbag’s status aren’t working properly, that can be very dangerous. Generally, once one of these sensors starts to go, the airbag warning light will come on, because the car will no longer be able to tell if the airbags are working properly. There may be nothing at all wrong with the bags, but it’s best to go and get it checked out. If it turns out to be the sensors messing up, the technician will either replace or reset them.

This can also include the passenger airbag sensor, which detects the weight being placed on the passenger seat and determines whether or not to activate the airbag on that side. If it isn’t working properly, it might not deploy even if an adult is sitting on that side of the car during a crash.

Electronic problems

This is something that can affect more than just the airbags themselves, but if there are electrical issues going on in one part of your vehicle, there is always a chance that they will transfer to other areas, including such important safety tools as airbags.
